Tutorial - How to create a Wiki page

by admin last modified 2008-08-20 12:26

You will be using a wiki engine integrated into our lrnlab server. Here is some basic information on how to use this particular wiki engine.

Read first this article on what wikis are about.

Adding, Editing, Rating and Commenting on Wiki Pages

Wiki pages allow a community to collaboratively edit a collection of documents, providing links between these documents is done almost automatically and it is easy to comment on and give a rating (1-5 stars) to these documents. This document provides an introduction to wiki pages on this site, for more information about the wiki product we use see [1] the ZWiki User Guide.

Commenting
To add a comment to a wiki page fill in the subject and body fields at the bottom of the wiki page and click on the add comment button. This is an easy way to provide feedback on a wiki page and your username and the time you made the comment are recorded.
Editing
To edit a wiki page click on the edit tab on the green bar at the top of the page (See [Figure1] below). Make the changes you want to the fields and click the save button. There are several different "Page Types" you can choose from, these are the same as Formats for Documents except there are more options. We recommend you use Structured Text, which is a simple way of structuring your text to provide links, bold, italics and other formatting. For more information on Structured text rules have a look at [2] Working With Structured Text.

Adding
There are a few different ways to add wiki pages. One way is to add it the same way you add any other type of item (eg. Documents and Files) on this site and that is to select Wiki Page from the Add New Item pull down menu (see [Figure1]). The problem with this method is that you have no link to this page and so no way of getting there without having the web address. The Wiki method of doing things is to use square brackets []. As you're making a comment on or editing a wiki page if you place something in square brackets then it becomes a link to another page within the wiki folder. If this page that you are linking do does not exist then a small question mark (?) will appear next to the link after you save the comment or page. When you click on this link you will create a new wiki page with that name. You will be forwarded to a form (the same as the edit form) to create your new page. The advantage here is that you have automatically created a link from the document you were commenting on and there is also a link back to that "parent" page from the page you just created. By creating wiki pages this way all pages become interlinked and you have a network of information.
Rating
To give a Wiki page a rating you click on the stars in the top right hand corner of the page (See [Figure2]). To give a 1-star rating you simply click on the first star to give 2-star you click on the second star etc.

Try it yourself

  1. Enter the Group Wiki folder in the sandpit area
  2. Add a comment to the FrontPage
  3. Give the FrontPage a rating
  4. Add a new subtopic to the FrontPage by adding a comment containing a link (something inside []'s). Then click on the add comment button and click on the small question mark that appears next to the link after the comment has been saved.
  5. Edit the subtopic you just created
